Ray Gun - Special Aspects?

Does the Ray Gun do anything outside of being a worse Laser Rifle? If so that'd be really useful to know.
. Although it's a good weapon until the Light Plasma Rifle or YK32 Pulse Pistol.So it's a top 3 energy weapon before the late game (when Plasma Rifles and Cannon become available).
I think it's major problem is that it can't compete with the Light Plasma Rifle and Pulse Pistol, which is a shame as it's not easier (but probably harder) to obtain than those two.
However, it should be better than a Laser Rifle (at least damage wise).
